How to Protect Critical Maritime Infrastructure: Proactive, Real-time and Reactive Measures You Need to Know

This webinar will show you how you can use maritime technology already in the planning phase before deployment of subsea cables, pipelines or offshore structures. You will see examples of how our reporting tools with years of data will provide any risk assessment manager or infrastructure planner with a detailed understanding of where to place any asset to minimize the risk of future damage.

You will also learn how to launch a 24/7 protection of your deployed and active subsea or offshore assets. Effectively setting up a perimeter around your critical infrastructure and setting up specialized event triggers that will warn you only if a vessel displays patterns indicating that it is a risk to your assets.

We’ll even show you how you can use intelligent software tools to investigate and identify sources of damage to your assets.

During the presentation you’ll experience how your critical maritime infrastructure can be protected in its entire lifecycle.

Key Topics

Proactive Protection: Data-based, strategic placement of maritime structures can minimize the risk of damage significantly. Use the right tools to asses risk pre-deployment.

Real-time Protection: Geo-fencing is an efficient way to monitor the areas you want to protect, but you need intelligent filtering to avoid information overload. Intelligent pattern detection technology can filter out only the vessels posing a real risk to your assets. You want alerts triggered by genuine threats, not by every ship that passes by.

Reactive Protection: If a maritime asset is left unprotected and an incident occurs—such as a vessel dragging an anchor over a cable or colliding with a wind turbine—incident reports are used to document these events in detail, but also to prevent such damage in the future.

Takeaway

Participants will gain insight into how advanced maritime data technology can lead to improved safety and reliability, throughout the lifecycle of maritime structures. After this webinar you will be able to answer questions like:

  • How do I identify which areas have a low risk of damage to the structure I will deploy?
  • How can I avoid information overload, and only be notified if a vessel poses a real threat?
  • My subsea or offshore structure was damaged, how can I find out what happened?
  • How quickly can hazardous vessel movements be detected?

Questions & Answers from live webinar
Protect critical maritime infrastructure

Question 1
Can you analyze (live or during a post-processing) the vessels “behavior” to determine if it is sailing, fishing or anchored – or do you rely om the vessel sending out what its doing on AIS?

Answer 1
The data is based on AIS. There is also the capability to integrate radar data where available. Regarding dark ships, the system supports integrating other detection methods, such as acoustic sensing or satellite imagery.

Question 2
Can you analyze (live or during a post-processing) the vessels “behavior” to determine if it is sailing, fishing or anchored – or do you rely om the vessel sending out what its doing on AIS?

Answer 2
Yes, the system can analyze vessel behavior, such as sailing, fishing, or anchoring, without relying on the vessel to send this information via AIS. It uses algorithms to detect activities.

Question 3
Do you have a presence in India ? If yes What is the range covered?

Answer 3
Data is collected globally with the help of a major satellite company. Gatehouse Maritime has the ability to integrate local data sources, making it applicable almost worldwide.

Question 4
How do we manage fishing vessels which does not have GPS equipment inbuilt?

Answer 4
Without GPS or other data sources, it would be necessary to rely on radar or other tracking technologies. This may tie into dark ship detection using seismic activity or electromagnetic sensors.

Question 5
Can you integrate data from physical monitoring equipment?

Answer 5
Yes, the system can integrate data from physical monitoring equipment, provided it has a geospatial element.

Question 6
Is the tool you are using here an application to be installed – or a web front-end accessible from any browser?

Answer 6
The tool can be both a standalone application or a web-based service. It can be accessed either through a hosted system or installed on-premises

Question 7
Have you ever collected evidence about human hostile activities (tapping or espionage)?

Answer 7
Gatehouse Maritime cannot comment directly on intelligence activities, but the system includes algorithms such as spoofing detection, which can be used for such purposes.

Question 8
Is there any limit to geofences between two countries of a cable landing?

Answer 8
There is no limit to geofences between countries. The geofences are customizable and can be defined as needed to divide zones across different territories.

Question 9
So combining satellite AIS and terrestrial AIS is possible in the system? Assuming it gives “better resolution” with terrestrial?

Answer 9
Yes, combining satellite AIS and terrestrial AIS is possible. The system can merge multiple data sources for better resolution, and radar targets can be linked with AIS for enhanced monitoring.

Question 10
How do you determine which vessels are a threat to my asset and which are not, to avoid too many alarms?

Answer 10
The system includes rules for geofences and allows filtering to ensure only vessels of interest trigger alarms. Different types of alerts can be set up based on specific conditions.

Question 11
How quickly can a virtual AtoN be deployed in case of an emergency?

Answer 11
If transmission capability is available, virtual AtoNs can be deployed immediately, using AIS base stations to send out navigation aids in real-time
