What can our Aids to Navigation product help you with?

Aids to Navigations (AtoNs) is our product for virtual AtoN Management and monitoring of physical AtoNs.

There are multiple use cases involving virtual AtoNs:

  • Dynamic Routing for Temporary Hazards:
When temporary hazards such as floating debris, uncharted shoals, or exclusion zones due to construction arise, virtual AtoNs can be quickly established to guide vessels safely around these obstacles, ensuring maritime safety is maintained in ever-changing conditions.
  • Emergency Situations:
In the event of an emergency, such as a ship grounding or an oil spill, virtual AtoNs can be rapidly deployed to mark the danger area, direct vessels away from the hazard, and assist in coordinating rescue operations effectively.
  • Environmental Protection and Monitoring:
Virtual AtoNs can be deployed to mark and protect environmentally sensitive areas like marine reserves or protected habitats. They also help enforce no-go zones or speed restrictions to minimize environmental impact and preserve delicate ecosystems.
  • Traffic Separation and Congestion Management:
In congested waterways, virtual AtoNs can be used to create virtual traffic separation schemes. These help reduce the risk of collisions by managing traffic flow, ensuring that vessels navigate safely through busy channels.
  • Support for Unmanned Vessels (USVs):
With the growing use of unmanned surface vehicles, virtual AtoNs are essential in guiding these vessels through complex maritime environments, relying on electronic signals to navigate and avoid obstacles safely.
  • AtoN Maintenance and Monitoring:
You need assurance that your AtoNs (both physical and virtual) are functioning correctly and consistently transmitting the intended signals, ensuring reliable navigation and safety.

Who can benefit from managing and monitoring Aids to Navigation?

Maritime Authority

Maritime authorities are responsible for safety of navigation. A crucial part of ensuring navigational safety is through setting up, configuring and managing a physical and virtual Aids to Navigations’ network.

Coast Guards

Coastguards are responsible for maintaining and managing navigational aids such as buoys, lighthouses, and electronic navigation systems to ensure safe and efficient maritime navigation.

Subsea Cables and Pipelines

Maintain and monitor both physical AtoN transponders and create virtual AtoNs as needed to properly mark your subsea structure.

Offshore Windfarms and Rigs

Maintain and monitor both physical AtoN transponders and create virtual AtoNs as needed to properly mark your offshore structure.

Aids to Navigation Features

All Aids to Navigation features are accessed directly in your internet browser through our intuitive user interface Maritime Domain Monitor (MDM).

Psysical AtoN

  • Setup monitoring of a physical AtoN
  • Set position for the AtoN by either entering Lat/long or by selecting a location on the interactive world map.
  • Set warning timeout. Set the number of minutes before a warning shall be created in case no messages are generated from the AtoN.
  • Set failure timeout. Set the number of minutes before a failure shall be created in case no messages are generated from the AtoN.
  • Set off position alarm and decide severity
  • Add users – Configure which users shall receive notification in case is warnings or failures.

Virtual AtoN

  • Create virtual AtoNs
  • Set transponder location on the ATON
  • Set position for the ATON by either entering Lat/long or by selecting a location on the interactive world map.
  • Provide a description for the ATON.
  • Select the aton message type such as Emergency wreck mark, fog signal etc.
  • Set warning timeout. Set the number of minutes before a warning shall be created in case no messages are generated from the AtoN.
  • Set failure timeout. Set the number of minutes before a failure shall be created in case no messages are generated from the AtoN.
  • Select whether the AtoN is virtual or synthetic. Synthetic AtoNs are placed above a physical structure such as a lighthouse. Virtual are mostly used but the standard supports synthetic.
  • Set broadcast interval. Defines how often messages are broadcasted.
  • Select which PSS (physical Shore Station) or chained PSS to use. Chained PSS requires a AtoN that supports chained messages.
  • Set a schedule for the AtoN. Defines when the AtoN shall broadcast messages.
  • Update Virtual AtoNs
  • Delete Virtual AtoNs

Generic AtoN funtionality

  • View list of existing AtoNs
  • Zoom to existing AtoN.
  • Toggle specific AtoN visibility on/off.
  • Share the AtoN with a group

Can an AtoN send messages?

Ours can. In addition to its robust navigation and monitoring capabilities, our AtoN product also offers comprehensive messaging features. These functionalities ensure that critical information is communicated effectively to vessels in the area, enhancing maritime safety and operational efficiency.

Key messaging features include:

  • Send messages, supporting: Addressed and broadcast
  • Schedule messages, supporting: Safety related messages, Geographic related messages
  • View lists of sent or received messages (Including option to view message content)
